Modernity, morphing in order to remain modern

Share & Comment

The word “Modern” became what the people defined it as, rather than any dictionary definition.  Instead, it could be said that the dictionary definition amended itself to perceptions and predilections of the people, mirroring their vague sense of what exactly “modern” should mean, rather than what it did.  As the times and the people and the advertising evolved and warped, so did the definition of “modern.”  This is how, in the present day and age, “modern” means something totally different than it meant ninety years ago.  Modernity is constantly changing, constantly morphing in order to remain modern, and it shall continue to do so until “modern” as a word and a concept no longer exists.

I think being modern is to be open-minded, willing to consider new ideas and opinions. It is the ability to listen to other information even if you initially feel like you want to resist it and be patient enough to actually analyze it frankly.  Being open-minded means that you are open to fairly considering evidence that might challenge your beliefs. The hallmark of an open-minded person is that they actively seek out opinions, perspectives, arguments and evidence that differ from their own.  A person must not avoid exposing themselves to anything that might challenge their beliefs and mindset. They should not design their life so as to surround themselves with people and media that support their beliefs to reduce any chance of encountering anything or anyone that is not consistent with their worldview.

Often a country’s level of modernization is measured by the ease with which people can communicate with each other. Modern technology makes things very easy to use and save time comparing it in the old fashion way. But modern technology also has created problems like wasting large sums in buying unnecessary gadgets which we hardly use. We buy them because we think it’s an element of being modern and that’s why everyone else has got one.

Fashion and modernity has a strong bound. Fashion has spread in all the spheres of our life. Fashion does not only mean a popular style of clothes hair etc. but it also includes etiquettes, manners and habits. Everybody wants to look beautiful and stylish. New and current style in clothes, manners etc. help people look more smart, attractive, stylish and presentable. Fashion reflects progress and growth of civilization. it is a mark of social progress, prosperity and change for novelty and thrill. But fashion becomes harmful when turned into obsession. Then it means waste of time, energy and money.

There is nothing to be ashamed of being fashionable. But excess of everything is bad and should be avoided. To live in style, dress well colorfully and smartly makes life lively, attractive, inviting and zestful. It is misconceived to link fashion with immorality. It is good to be fashionable but it is better to be simple and dignified. The maxim ‘simple living and high thanking’ holds true till today. We should not follow the western culture, habits and manners blindly. Our own culture is so rich and unique that we can depend upon it. Fashion and modernity should be promoted to enrich our life, not to degrade it.
